A Philadelphia rally on Saturday, July 3, 2021, starting at 2pm promises to be loud, energetic, colorful.
Entitled In the Spirit of Consuewella Africa, We Must All MOVE to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal and All Political Prisoners, the event will begin on the east side of the Municipal Services Building (1401 JFK Blvd). The march eventually ends at the Liberty Bell (6th & Market), after stops at Gov. Wolf’s office (8th & Arch) and WHYY (6th and Race).
Community leaders will begin the rally in front of the Crown – Freedom mural honoring Black women activists (centering Ramona Africa), in the same plaza where the hated Frank Rizzo statue was finally removed one year ago after massive protests following the police murder of George Floyd. One or two of the women in the mural will be speaking.
A 14-foot-tall puppet depicting Mumia Abu-Jamal will be making its first public appearance.
Mumia is an innocent man, a victim of racist police brutality, unjustly incarcerated by Pennsylvania for over 39 years. His case is still under appeal. It represents the injustice of a system that has wrongly imprisoned millions of our family members and revolutionaries. He recently underwent open-heart surgery. He must receive a better diet and more exercise in order to recuperate.
Consuewella Africa passed on June 16, 2021. Her health greatly suffered as she grieved the recently revealed evil mistreatment of the remains of her daughters Tree and Netta Africa, bombed, shot, and murdered by this government on May 13, 1985. The Minister of Confrontation of the MOVE Organization, Consuewella was a survivor of the Aug. 8, 1978 police attack on Powelton Ave and served 16 years in prison, all the while refusing to renounce MOVE.
